MALDIVES BANS 15 CFC PRODUCTS

The Maldivian Islands consists in the group of countries that are soon to be submerged underwater. This Beautiful small Island state today fears its own survival!!

Simple fact remains, simple questions DO THEY DESERVE THEIR FATE? IS IT THEIR FAULT? WHY MALDIVES? and yet simple answers that we all know!!

Last Sunday, Under the "Products that cannot be imported into Maldives Law, Clause 5" (not sure of the exact English translation, this is more of a literal translation, in Dhevihi it is called"Dhivehiraaje ah ehthere kurun manaa thaketheege gaanoonu" ), The Ministry of Defense and National Security banned 15 CFC products.

As Maldives is a member country that singed/ratified the Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, by the end of this year Maldives Have to stop importing CFC products or products that have CFC in it.

Chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs are gases used in refrigerant and aerosols as propellant, which contains Carbon sometimes Hydrogen, Chlorine and Fluorine. In 1978, Sweden became the first country to ban CFC products. Later the US and Canada followed. In most countries CFC products are not allowed nor used as they destroy the ozone layer.

However an alternative is used, Hydrofluorocarbons or HFC, they do not harm the ozone layer or contribute to global warming. HCFs are organic compounds that contain Hydrogen, Carbon and Fluorine. It does not contain Chlorine and do not have any potential for the destruction of ozone.

Maldivian Government has started an campaign to make Maldives Carbon Neutral by 2020!! For a small island state this may not have the slightest change in the global atmospheric pollution. However, this effort is seen as an heroic attempt to spread the awareness and message to the remaining countries.
