Maldives decides Gayoom's younger brother Yameen as the New President

Congratulations to the President Elect Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Gayoom vs Naseed 2008, all over again in Maldives, with all odds in favor of Gayoom younger brother, Maldivian Elections 2013 conclude with Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) candidate Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom charming polls.

Backed by potential political entities; Qasim Ibrahims’s Jumhooree Party and the Islamic conservative Adaalath Party, and other minority political parties, Yameen secured majority of the total votes meeting victory requirement of over 50% + 1 vote, defeating Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, the Indian Ocean Island President Mohamed Nasheed by over 51% of votes.

Though proving to be a difficult election, with unwanted intervention of biased judicial authorities and imprudent political actors, as promised Elections Commissions has indeed successfully paved way for an independent, free and fair elections. Voter turnout higher than ever before, with over 214000 voter turnout, people power yet again tested in the Island nation.

Ironically, major 2008 Gayoom opposition including Jumhooree Party, Qaumee Party and Adaalath Party, backs President elect Abdullah Yameen who is sponsored by long-time authoritarian President Gayoom. With Pro-democratic ideology Nasheed’s landslide victory in 2008 by 97222 votes to 82121, Gayoom was defeated badly bringing an end to the 30-year repressive government.

Also ironically all alleged 7th February coup actors of 2012 are seen aligned standing stronger than ever before, leaving less room for possible independent investigation and reasonable justice for the events of 6th, 7th and 8th February 2012.

Yameen himself alleged of ‘Mafia’ activities, corruption and dealings with violent street gangs leave much room to speculate on how the next 5 years of office will be like.

Meanwhile, sleeping President Dr. Mohamed Waheed, whose official constitutional term expired on 11th November 2013, is expected to leave his public office later tonight or in the morning as broadcasted on his pre-recorded TV address from earlier. The President of the Peoples Majlis has announced earlier that they are making necessary arrangements for the swearing in ceremony of the new President on 17th November 2013.

Former President Nasheed meanwhile has officially announced his approval of the polling conclusion and has called all his supporters and party members to accept the results peacefully and stressed the importance of being a strong opposition essential for democracy. He also said it is improper to bring down an elected President from the streets but through direct vote.

What fate awaits 2000 isles of the Indian Ocean is yet to be observed.
